It is standard tattoo care to use ointment for the first three days. But a lot of artists will let their tattoos heal dry and just wait for the third day to use lotion to alleviate itching.
I use A&D ointment no more than three times a day. I wash with warm water and green soap(you can use a gentle, non-perfume anti-bacterial soap) in the morning when I wake up and then apply A&D in a very thin coat, just enough to absorb into the fresh tattoo, then again around midday(always wash before each application), and before I go to sleep. I do this for three days, then switch to lubriderm with my routine. Lots of people don’t like lubriderm because it can sting for some people. If that is the case with you, use another unscented white lotion like Aveeno or Eucerin. Some people buy into those expensive creams and "goos" but you only need to use cheap, generic store brands with the same ingredients to properly heal your tattoo.
Nobody can heal completely from a tattoo in as little as 10 days. Sure, your tattoo looks and feels healed, but it is NOT healed. You still can’t let your tattoo be exposed to the sun, you can’t go swimming(you’re exposing yourself to infection) you can’t take a bath and you can’t shave the area or use perfume body wash. It will take your skin at least three weeks to completely heal. A lot of people take a month, I do. It depends on the person and the location of the tattoo. Your tattoo will look and feel like the rest of your skin when it is completely healed. But make sure you wait at least two weeks before swimming or applying sunblock if you plan on being in the sun. You don’t want to ruin a tattoo before you’ve had a chance to enjoy and flaunt it.
Best of luck!!
